The Turning – one of the most cataclysmic events to ever happen in the Witch World.

The Kolder (a race of scientifically advanced people) found a gate from their planet to the Witch World. The Kolder, finding Witch World fertile, decide to take over the planet. Using unknown machinery, the Kolder were able to control the minds of the men and women of Karsten but they found their machinery would not work on those people who were descended from the Old Race due to the magic the blood of the Old Race contains. In order to rid themselves of the people they could not control, the Kolder has the Duke of Karsten (under mind control) declare all descendants of the Old Race outlaws. This causes a genocide in Karsten and a flood of refugees into the neighboring Escarpt, which is full of the Old Race.

The murders and mass exodus of people from Karsten along with tactical strikes from Estcarp (killing the Duke of Karsten) leave Karsten in political shambles. Pagar of Gren – a nameless soldier – comes to the throne of Karsten by uniting Karsten against a single enemy: the Witches of Estcarp. Pagar raises a huge army and prepares to start a war against Estcarp. He feels the war will accomplish multiple goals: reunite Karsten, kill witches, fill the empty coffers of the Karsten Dukedom and annex land.

The people and Witches of Estcarp realize that they do not have army nor allies enough to win a foot war. The Witches then decide to do the unimaginable: wait until the armies of Karsten are traveling through the mountains…and then use the power to destroy the armies by twisting the mountains themselves. The combined power of the Witches and their allies turn and twist the mountains that separated Estcarp from Karsten until they were unrecognizable. All familiar landscapes were destroyed along with all known paths between the two lands. Almost all of the Karsten army is killed.

This act becomes known as The Turning and it had far reaching repercussions: Most of the Witches were killed by power drain. Previously closed gates were reopened. Other previously lost gates are discovered. Secrets long buried are discovered and Powers of both Light and Dark long thought vanished rose again. Most amazing of all are the founding of previously forgotten lands and long lost powers in Escore.

The Witch World is Grand Master Andre Norton’s bestselling fantasy series. In STORMS OF VICTORY she began the most ambitious undertaking of her long and storied career, bringing to life the turbulent and pivotal events of the Witch World’s greatest crisis. FLIGHT OF VENGEANCE is the book that Witch World fans have long awaited. Here, in two full-length novels, are the awesome power and terrible consequences of THE TURNING, told by the people whose lives were utterly changed by this cataclysmic event. Exile is the story of two outcasts thrust together by a monumental feat of magic, worked by the combined force of all the witches of Escarp to move mountains. The witches stopped the invasion by Pagar of Karsten, but their effort cost the witches dearly, killing many and striking powerless many others. A great upheaval uprooted families, destroyed nations, and wreaked havoc on the face of the world, unleashing powers thought long dead and gone. Exile is, most of all, the tale of Nolar, a witch who couldn’t find her power until all others lost theirs. Magically summoned to rescue another, she discovered an enemy who, in his mind, would become a friend. Falcon Hope is the story of the Dalesfolk of Sea Keep and the falconers they hire to defend themselves. In crisis, the falcon band find themselves fighting with, instead of against, other Witch Worlders to defend one small part of their world against an otherworldly enemy.
