Ok. So, this is the 2nd short I’ve read by Brooke Bolander and the 2nd short that I’ve adored.

I *think* that I enjoyed “Our Talons Can Crush Galaxies” a little bit more than “And You Shall Know Her by the Trail of Dead” – but only because “Talons” is more of a revenge story. I like these kinds of revenge stories, lol.

“And You Shall Know Her by the Trail of Dead” has more characters, more dialogue and more plot. I have to say it was the character development that pushed “And You Shall Know Her by the Trail of Dead” over to the 4-star mark (for me).

At the beginning of “And You Shall Know Her by the Trail of Dead” the heroine, Rhye, doesn’t/can’t admit her love and trust for her partner, Rack (or herself, for that matter). Due to her childhood and prejudices to her kind (both Rack and Rhye are sentient bio-mechanical constructs/cyborgs of some kind that grow and age like humans), Rhye spent a lot of her youth being 100% self-destructive. After every episode, Rack would patch Rhye up and then she’d begin her dance with death again.

The thing that finally snapped Rhye out of her self-imposed state was the possibility of losing Rack. The threat of never seeing Rack again pushes Rhye to the limit – it forces her to grow up and confront who she is as well as who she was.

I really can’t say more than that as I don’t want to spoil the story – but I can say RECOMMENDED!
