Claire Parks has been very sick, but she's fine now—just fine—and ready to paint the town red. Well, pink. On her first excursion into the wild world of dating, she nets Bud, a tall, sexy, good-looking lumberjack. She won him fair and square, her prize for not dying. But after a weekend of wild sex, she discovers he's not what she thinks he is.
Undercover police officer Lieutenant Tyler "Bud" Morrison can't believe his eyes. What's a 'princess' doing in a dance club known for its rough trade? She needs rescuing, and rescuing women is what Bud does best. He saw Claire first—finders keepers. After a weekend of the hottest sex he's ever had, he's definitely keeping this one. When trouble comes her way, he pulls out all the stops to protect her. Except Claire doesn't want Bud at her back. She wants him in her bed.
I really enjoyed this book. Bud is very Alpha without the scary/stalker issues I had with John Huntington from Midnight Man. I loved the fact that Bud realized he was in love with Claire really early. I wasn’t bothered by the fact that Claire took Bud home with her the night they met – I could understand her ability to tell the difference between those who wanted to hurt her and those who were “safe.” Again, the sex is hot but rather unbelievable.
I enjoyed the story quite a lot, to be honest. The only part of the book that really made my eyes roll was the conflict near the end.
Midnight Run, Midnight Man and the final book in the series, Midnight Angel, all start a few days apart and end a few days apart. So, while Midnight Man deals with Suzanne being hunted by killers – Midnight Run deals with the fact that Suzanne and Claire are good friends. Being good friends with Suzanne puts Claire in the line of fire of the bad guys who want to locate and kill Suzanne.
Claire spent a lot of time sick with Leukemia and under supervision due to being kidnapped…so when Suzanne’s issues cause Claire to need police protection…she throws a hissy fit and wants to break up. My only thought was…you’re a selfish child! I wanted Bud to say to her, “International mobsters have sent TWO assassins after one of your friends and another of your friends was just found tortured to death. Put on your big girl panties and grow up.”
The one more thing: I’m starting to notice that the heroines in this series are all very…small, delicate, feminine and mostly innocent. They all need to be protected by the big man. That part kind of bothers me. I love the fact that the men are over-protective but that doesn’t mean the women need to be delicate little flowers that need to be rescued all the time. I would love it if one of these strong men could have a strong woman who is more of a partner and less of a burden. A regular woman’s body type (curves) would be nice, too.
Other than that, great Alpha hero with a heart of gold!
