maybe this time

Andie Miller is ready to move on in life. She wants to marry her fiancé and leave behind everything in her past, especially her ex-husband, North Archer. But when Andie tries to gain closure with him, he asks one final favor of her before they go their separate ways forever. A very distant cousin of his has died and left North as the guardian of two orphans who have driven out three nannies already, and things are getting worse. He needs a very special person to take care of the situation and he knows Andie can handle anything.

What follows is a hilarious adventure in exorcism, including a self-doubting parapsychologist, an annoyed medium, her Tarot-card reading mother, an avenging ex-mother-in-law, and, of course, her jealous fiancé. And just when she thinks things couldn’t get more complicated, North shows up on the doorstep making her wonder if maybe this time things could be different between them.

If Andie can just get rid of all the guests and ghosts, she’s pretty sure she can save the kids, and herself, from the past. But fate might just have another thing in mind….

It’s an ok book. It sorta reminded me again that Jenny Crusie doesn’t really write typical romance novels. She writes novels that have romance. And she likes to experiment…which really isn’t that bad.

This particular book is a ghost story. It’s an interesting ghost story and I enjoyed it…but I think I would have enjoyed a little more interaction between the hero/heroine. I think that the story between Andie and North would have been much hotter without the rest of the story. But the story was decent and I enjoyed it.

ETA: There are some reviews that I’ve read that feel that the sex the ghost engages in (using other people’s bodies w/out their knowledge) is rape. I’ve been pondering that idea – and I still am. I’m not sure I agree with that statement/idea (and it’s taken me a while to decide why). Not because the sex was consensual (cause it isn’t, technically) but because there was a ghost possessing someone’s body. I normally think of rape as non-consensual sex that happens as a result of force, coercion and/or chemical means. I think of the event(s) that happen are (spiritual) possession and not rape. I really think that possession is worse than rape in a way. The human host has no control over their body/functions as there is another (ghost/demon/whatever) in control. Rape is mostly about power and lust. I feel possession is about life (wanting it) and jealously. The [ghostly] possessor wants more than just a body – the want a life and all it entails.
