Second Story Books is one of the largest used and rare bookstores in the world. Two locations in the Washington metropolitan area, both conveniently on Metro’s Red Line, house over a million books in all categories as well as collectible manuscripts, maps, ephemera, prints and posters.
I’ve known about Second Story Books for a long time now. I visit it whenever I’m in the city (which doesn’t happen as much as I would like). Second Story Books is the one place I can go and KNOW I will be able to get my book porn on. 🙂 Specializing in rare and used books, you are never sure what you’ll find at Second Story Books. I like to drool over the specialty books: Tabletop sized, illustrated copies of The Hobbit that are covered in gold, scholarly works and collector copies of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Simply amazing.
Another really cool feature of Second Story Books is their sidewalk displays. Whenever I’m in DuPont Circle and I see those little trollies jammed with books – I am drawn like a moth to a fire.
Something that strikes me odd about Second Story Books is that – for a used book store – it has very few genre books. Since I am a huge genre reader, this is a negative for me. But I did manage to score a copy of the complete works of Conan the Barbarian.
